About
Reverend Jeremiah Wright has been a tireless organizer and outspoken voice for the downtrodden in his over 35 years of service to his church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Southside Chicago. It also just so happens that Wright was instrumental in getting an originally non-religious young Barack Obama into his pews.
However when the corporate media got a hold of his sermons, they cherry picked his most controversial statements, decontextualized them, and used them as a cudgel against the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. As a social reformer, Wright was bound to say fiery things, which happens when you speak truth to power and unload fire and brimstone sermons as part of the prophetic tradition. However as a result of the media frenzy, Wright and his church have come under attack from all quarters. Many uber-patriotic Americans cannot believe that this preacher would have the gall to question American exceptionalism and self-righteousness in the face of so much suffering that it has caused in the world. Others cannot look beyond his use of the term “white” to refer to the entire edifice of white supremacy. The racism by proxy has been appalling, yet entirely predictable when stirred up by a vicious right-wing media machine.
As the media lynch mob has grown, the idea of this web site took shape. In the coming weeks, I hope to aggregate all articles, interviews from the point of view of the Reverend and his ministry, as well as from supporters who feel the Reverend has received a raw deal. This web site will also highlight elements of black liberation theology so that readers can better understand the profundity of Reverend Wright’s righteous indignation, but also compassion and ultimately faith in Jesus Christ as the liberator and harbinger of the social gospel.
Please note this web site is in no way affiliated with Reverend Wright, Trinity United Church of Christ, or anyone else mixed up in this drama. It is solely the work of an admirer from the other side of the Great Lakes.
